What are Core Measures?

Core Measures is one way to compare the quality of care that hospitals give. Core measures set national standards of care in five distinct categories, and hospitals are then measured on how often they provide recommended treatments known to get the best results for patients with certain medical conditions or surgical procedures. The measures are based on scientific evidence, and health care experts and researchers are constantly evaluating the evidence to make sure that the measures and guidelines are kept up-to-date.

The four Core Measures categories measured here at Mount Auburn Hospital include:

Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) - A heart attack (also called AMI or acute myocardial infarction) happens when the arteries leading to the heart become blocked and the blood supply is slowed or stopped. These measures show some of the standards of care provided, if appropriate, for most adults who have had a heart attack.

Heart Failure - Heart Failure is a weakening of the heart's pumping power. With heart failure, your body doesn't get enough oxygen and nutrients to meet its needs. These measures show some of the standards of care provided for most adults with heart failure.

Pneumonia - Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that causes difficulty breathing, fever, cough and fatigue. These measures show some of the recommended treatments for pneumonia.

Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) - Hospitals can reduce the risk of wound infection after surgery by making sure patients get the right medicines at the right time on the day of their surgery. These measures show some of the standards of care.
