Women's Imaging

Diagnostic Imaging can play a crucial role in your healthcare regimen. Mount Auburn Hospital’s Hoffman Breast Center provides all of your Women’s Imaging needs. From mammograms to ultrasounds to bone density screening, you can be assured that you will get accurate diagnoses and that our healthcare team will treat you with compassion and respect.

Mammography:

Women's ImagingA mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that screens for breast cancer. The Hoffman Breast Center offers standard mammograms as well as digital mammograms, which puts the image of the breast into an electronic file, making it easier for the radiologist to see the breast from different viewpoints. We also offer 3-D mammograms which uses both digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis. Breast tomosynthesis puts three-dimensional images of the breast into a file, allowing the radiologist to see the breast tissue even more clearly.

Breast Ultrasound:

A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissues inside the breast. It can show all areas of the breast, including the area closest to the chest wall, which is harder to see on a mammogram. This diagnostic tool is used to see if a breast lump is filled with fluid or whether it is solid. A breast ultrasound does not replace the need for a mammogram, but is often used as an additional screening tool after an abnormal mammogram.

Breast MRI Screening:

Breast MRI screening is typically reserved for women considered at “high risk” to develop breast cancer. Factors that make a woman at higher risk include:

• Family History of breast cancer

• Personal history of breast cancer

• Having a BRCA1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)uses magnetic fields to create an image of the breast. The Hoffman Breast Center uses this highly effective tool in its screening of patients who are considered high risk. If an abnormal screening does occur, MRI-guided breast biopsies are sometimes performed. This procedure uses computer technology to guide a needle to a previously detected abnormal area of the breast.

Bone Density Screening:

A bone density test is a form of x-ray that measures density of minerals, for example, calcium, in your bones. This helps your doctor determine the strength of your bones.
