The Department

Staffed by 14 full-time radiologists and 14 residents, Mount Auburn Hospital's Radiology Department performs approximately 200,000 diagnostic examinations yearly. The filmless department uses a state-of-the-art PACS (picture archiving and communication system) for the display and interpretation of digital images.

The radiographic equipment includes three direct digital rooms and two multiplate digital readers. There are three digital fluoroscopic rooms in which 2,800 fluoroscopic procedures are performed each year. Eight ultrasound systems (two with 4D imaging) are used to perform more than 33,500 ultrasound examinations each year.

Two state-of-the-art multidetector General Electric CT scanners (one 64-slice and one 4-slice) enable the department to perform more than 24,400 CT examinations per year. Technologists assist in the creation of 3D reformatted images and other complex post-processing of studies. Two 1.5T MRI scanners are used to perform approximately 10,350 MRI examinations per year. The Nuclear Medicine division has four SPECT systems, with multidetector capabilities. PET/CT is offered as a clinical service.

The Women's Imaging division, located in the recently dedicated Hoffman Breast Center, performs about 21,000 mammograms yearly, including interpretation with 3D mammography utilizing Hologic Breast Tomosynthesis. Breast ultrasonography and breast MRI are in common use. Biopsies are performed using ultrasound, stereotactic, and MR guidance.

Three interventional radiologists in our department perform more than 4,800 cases annually utilizing a state-of-the-art digital angiography suite.

The department’s library contains an extensive print and digital teaching collection. Radiology textbooks are added to the library shelves annually through a department book fund. Numerous digital resources including lecture videos and case presentations are available. The department subscribes to multiple online resources including STATdx, RADPrimer, and eAnatomy. Pubmed and primary literature are accessed through E-Research @ Harvard Libraries. The library digital projector is used to present cases and lectures at daily conferences.
