Description

“Being mindful is the practice of being present.” We may desire to be awake and aware in the moments of our life, and yet too often we are not. We shift instead into autopilot, shut down emotionally (or become overwhelmed), or simply settle for getting through the day. The practice of mindfulness calls us to stop settling, and to wake up to exactly how things are right here, right now. This present moment awareness sometimes brings relief and ease, and sometimes does not, but it always provides us with a genuine experience of our own precious life.

This 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program is the original program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Stress Reduction Clinic at University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This program is evidence based and has been shown to complement traditional medical and psychological treatments and general wellness. Research evidence suggests that MBSR is beneficial for general psychological health and stress management in those with medical and psychiatric illness as well as in healthy individuals.

The entire MBSR program is delivered live through online video conferencing (Zoom). We will practice mindfulness in many forms (sitting, moving, walking, scanning, etc.). There will be an opportunity for small and whole group sharing, checking in and asking questions. You will receive audio downloads to guide much of your daily, at home practice. Technology required: High Speed Internet, Laptop or desktop with speaker, microphone and video capacity (no phone, iPads or other tablets, please).

What is required of you during this course:

  • Participate in orientation, all eight classes, and the retreat class
  • Practice daily for approximately 1 hour
  • Hold yourself and other participants with kindness and respect
  • Stay curious about this live exploration
  • A willingness to be seen as human (imperfectly, perfect, and OK)
