Welcome to Mount Auburn Hospital!
Overlooking the banks of the Charles River, steps away from Harvard University and Harvard Square, sits one of the nation’s oldest hospitals. For over 150 years Mount Auburn Hospital has been committed to providing outstanding, compassionate care to the entire Cambridge community. Today, our distinguished faculty continues a long tradition of clinical excellence in every medical subspecialty, primary care and hospital medicine. Our internal medicine residency program has a long history of training physicians to be outstanding clinicians, educators and leaders in the healthcare system.
Mount Auburn is a vibrant full service hospital serving the needs of the greater Cambridge community – with a busy emergency department which sees a wide range of medical and surgical emergencies. The hospital also has a full service cardiac care program from cardiac catheterization, interventional procedures, cardiac surgery and a CCU as well as a cardiac step down unit. Cancer care is a busy service at Mount Auburn. We see patients with a wide range of solid tumors including lung cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer, with state-of-the art care, including active clinical trials in all of these malignancies.
Our Department of Medicine is innovative and growth oriented. In the past 3 years we have developed new clinical programs in Medical Genetics, Weight Management, Palliative Care, a Liver Center and a Pain Management program.
We have a strong commitment to training physicians in primary care. This year we have expanded our Primary Care Pathway and housed it in a new state-of-the-art level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home. Our primary care faculty are dedicated to teaching all you need to know to be an outstanding PCP, from optimal patient-doctor communication to the latest evidence regarding complex disease management strategies.
When you walk through the halls of Mount Auburn you are not only struck by the beautiful facilities, but by the wonderfully welcoming clinicians and staff whose commitment to their patients is evident from the moment you enter the hospital. Our residents love being here – the warm and supportive environment nestled by the river allows them to enjoy the practice of medicine while developing lifelong friendships. Whether you take a run along the river or a walk into the square for a coffee, our location makes training in medicine an invigorating and unforgettable experience.
This just begins to describe all that is happening at Mount Auburn. I invite you to learn more about our wonderful hospital, residency program and incredible patient care programs. We are excited to be building on a 150 year legacy of excellence with compassion. Come and see if you would want to help us write our next chapter!

Dr. David Hurwitz, former chief of medicine at Mount Auburn wrote, “However important the specific advances in medical services at the hospital may be, the most important development is the climate for learning which has been engendered among the staff…” I am pleased to lead our program and grow our climate for learning and in doing so, allow our Residents to provide exceptional patient care and to develop professionally. The Mount Auburn Hospital Internal Medicine training program provides a personalized approach to Resident professional development through our innovative clinical pathways of Primary Care, Fellowship and Hospitalist Medicine as well as our flexible elective time. In addition to supporting an optimal clinical learning environment, we promote our Residents’ diverse scholarly interests. Our passionate Interns and Residents build unique and innovative training experiences upon a core foundation of Excellence with Compassion.
In the following material, you will discover the commitment of Mount Auburn Hospital to excellence in patient care and excellence in medical education. We view these commitments as inseparable, and at our institution you will find remarkable clinicians and teachers who share this vision. For more than 75 years, Mount Auburn Hospital has been training medical students and residents in Preliminary, Categorical and Primary Care Internal Medicine. In the ever-changing world of medical practice, our program continues to evolve in anticipation of these changes. On this website, we highlight how our training program prepares physicians by developing the skills necessary to meet both current and future challenges.
