Welcome to Mount Auburn Hospital!
Overlooking the banks of the Charles River, steps away from Harvard University and Harvard Square, sits one of the nation’s oldest hospitals. For over 150 years, Mount Auburn Hospital has been committed to providing outstanding, compassionate care to Cambridge and our surrounding communities. Today, our distinguished faculty continues a long tradition of clinical excellence in every medical subspecialty, as well as primary care and hospital medicine. Our internal medicine residency program has a long history of training physicians to be outstanding clinicians, educators and leaders in healthcare.
Mount Auburn is a vibrant full-service hospital serving the needs of our communities. Services include a busy emergency department, which sees a wide range of medical and surgical emergencies, and a full-service ICU staffed continuously with trained intensive care medicine specialists. The hospital also has a full-service cardiac care program, including cardiac catheterization, interventional procedures including catheter-based aortic vale replacement, and a busy adult cardiac surgery program. Cancer care at Mount Auburn focuses on a multi-disciplinary approach, with specialists from several areas collaborating to provide comprehensive service. We care for patients with a wide range of solid tumors including lung cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer, with state-of-the-art care, including active clinical trials focused on the treatment of these malignancies.
Our Department of Medicine is innovative and growth-oriented. In the past several years, we have developed new clinical programs in Medical Genetics, Weight Management, Palliative Care, a Liver Center and advanced endoscopy procedures.
We have a strong commitment to training physicians in primary care, and have developed a new state-of-the-art level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home in our hospital-based primary care practice. Our primary care faculty are dedicated to teaching all you need to know to be an outstanding PCP, from optimal patient-doctor communication to the latest evidence regarding complex disease management strategies.
When you walk through the halls of Mount Auburn you are not only struck by the beautiful facilities, but by the welcoming clinicians and staff whose commitment to their patients is evident from the moment you enter the hospital. Our residents love being here – the warm and supportive environment nestled by the river allows them to enjoy the practice of medicine while developing lifelong friendships. Whether you take a run along the river or a walk into the square for a coffee, our location makes training in medicine an invigorating and unforgettable experience.
This just begins to describe all that is happening at Mount Auburn. I invite you to learn more about our wonderful hospital, residency program and incredible patient care programs. We are excited to be building on a 150-year legacy of excellence with compassion. Come and see if you would want to help us write our next chapter!

The Harvard Medical School affiliated Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mount Auburn Hospital has a long-standing reputation of training exceptional physicians. Many of our former graduates have gone on to become leaders in both general internal medicine and internal medicine subspecialties.
Mount Auburn Hospital is located in Cambridge, a city that boasts of having a diverse population. Our residents thus have the unique opportunity to take care of patients with both common and rare medical ailments. We also take pride in providing intensive, high-quality didactics; in the form of resident reports, noon conferences, Hatem rounds, teaching rounds, ambulatory subspecialty clinics - to name a few. Completion of a scholarly project is a requirement for graduation from the residency. We offer three different categorical medicine training pathways: The Primary Care, the Hospitalist and the Fellowship Pathway and a robust Preliminary Medicine Year. Details on these are available in further sections of this website.
By virtue of our close affiliation with Harvard Medical School, we host several Medical Students during their Sub-Internships and Core Electives, thus providing our residents with ample opportunities to teach. In addition, members of our house staff receive appointment as clinical fellows at Harvard Medical School, which grants them access to Harvard's vast educational and extra - curricular resources.
For 150 years, Mount Auburn Hospital has provided exceptional care to our community. Our residents continue to embrace this tradition of excellence with compassion, with great pride. I am a former trainee of the Mount Auburn Residency Program, and truly feel that this a special place to learn and practice this very noble profession. I sincerely hope that you that you will apply to our program and give us the opportunity to share with you, the formative years of your career.
